Open Canoe 2* Foundation (O2F)
This course is open to CFAV’s and cadets aged 16 and over from the ACF and CCF. ATC and SCC bids are welcome on a fill up basis.
This is a 5-day introduction to open canoeing (O2F) in a sheltered water environment. Candidates must be water confident and be able to swim 25mts wearing a Buoyancy Aid.
The course content includes clothing and equipment, access and conservation, river hazards and grading, weather, lifting, carrying and launching, efficient forward paddling, Manoeuvring the canoe in confined spaces, sideways movement, poling and self/group rescues. This course includes a two day expedition involving river navigation, campcraft and expedition equipment. roup rescues.
Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be issued a CCAT O2F brassard badge (cadets only) and course certificate.
Candidates who successfully complete both K2F and O2F will be awarded with a BCU 2 star award.
For CFAV’s this is the skills entry level for the BCU UKCC Level 1 Coaching qualification.
The personal contribution for this course is £35; bids must be placed through WESTMINSTER and will not be excepted until the course fee has been received. Personal contributions will not be refunded for any cancellations received less than 7 days prior to the course commencing.

BCU 3* Open Canoe (O3N)
This course is open to CFAV’s and cadets aged 16 and over from the ACF and CCF. ATC and SCC bids are welcome on a fill up basis.
This is a 5-day BCU 3 star open canoe training and assessment course in a moving water environment. Candidates must be water confident and be able to swim 25mts wearing a Buoyancy Aid.
The course content includes clothing and equipment, access and conservation, river hazards and grading, weather, lifting, carrying and launching, efficient forward/reverse paddling, moving sideways, edging, support strokes, breaking in/out, ferry gliding, group/self/deep water rescues, boat trim, sailing and poling.
Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be issued a CCAT (O3N) brassard badge (cadets only), and a BCU 3* Open Canoe certificate
For CFAV’s this is the skills entry level for the BCU UKCC Level 2 Coaching qualification.
Candidates must have the following pre-requisites to attend this course:
- Hold BCU new 2 star award or OFC/O2F
- Have logbook evidence of at least 3 journeys on varying sheltered and 3 on moving waters (grade 2) of at least 4 hours Duration (10Km)

BCU 4* Open Canoe Leader (Training)
These courses are open to CFAV’s from the ACF and CCF (Army) section. ATC and SCC bids are welcome on a fill up basis. The BCU 4* open canoe is a 2-day training course.
Candidates must be water confident and be able to swim 25mts wearing a Buoyancy Aid.
This award is discipline specific (Open Canoe) and is relevant for coaches who wish to lead competent paddlers (BCU 3*) in the white water and open water enviroment. Prior to attending this course candidates must have successfully completed the relevant BCU3* award and ideally White Water Safety and Rescue
The personal contribution for this course is £35; bids must be placed through WESTMINSTER and will not be excepted until the course fee has been received. Personal contributions will not be refunded for any cancellations received less than 7 days prior to the course commencing.

BCU 4* Open Canoe Leader (Assessment)
This course is open to CFAV’s from the ACF and CCF (Army) section. ATC and SCC bids are welcome on a fill up basis. The BCU 4* open canoe is a 2-day assessment course.
Candidates must be water confident and be able to swim 25mts wearing a Buoyancy Aid.
This award is discipline specific (Open Canoe) and is relevant for coaches who wish to lead competent paddlers (BCU 3*) in the white water and open water environment,
Prior to attending this assessment, candidate must have completed the following pre-requisites:
BCU 4* training course and have a NGB in date authorised LR form
Provide evidence of 12 trips (minimum four hours duration) that includes at least:
3 different grade 2 river trips and 3 different open water journeys with winds up to
force 4 (minimum 4 hours duration), as a member of a group
3 different grade 1-2 river trips and 3 different open water journeys with winds up to
force 3, (minimum 4 hours duration), as an assistant leader
The above journeys should involve some overnight camps
White Water Safety & Rescue Training
