Restrictions. This is open to Cadets aged 17 years+ and CFAV’s from the ACF and CCF. This is not a course for novices. Candidates applying to attend CADET CANSKI are to have successfully completed the SF1 and ISC (equivalent experience must be identified on the CCAT course.
Course Content. Canada’s Mountain National Parks are home to some of the world’s most spectacular slopes and peaks to explore on skis. The backcountry ski in Banff National Park is near endless. There are so many options for single day and multi day tours covering all sorts of terrain. The CADET CANSKI expedition is a 6-day course. This course is an introduction to alpine ski touring (a minimum of 40% of course time will be spent in off-piste terrain). The content will include ski touring clothing and equipment, winter hazards, planning and participating in a tour, avalanche awareness and avoidance, movement of skis in ascent and descent, navigation on skis, route choice and finding. The outcome of CADET CANSKI is for the candidate to achieve the Basic Ski Touring (BST) award by demonstrating a basic level of skill in alpine ski touring skills to be a competent member of a led group on basic ski touring expeditions.
Notes. Candidates should be physically fit, free from injury and have a keen interest in adventurous activities. This course may be used towards a gold DofE residential project. Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be issued a CCAT course certificate and brassard badge (cadets only).
*The course cost includes: transport from and back to the UK, accommodation, meals, technical clothing and equipment and instruction.
*The course will be based at Banff YWCA, Banff, Alberta, Canada.
CCAT Application Process.
A CCAT course application is available on WESTMINSTER and the CCAT website www.armycadetadventure.co.uk. The course fee is £500.00. An electronic course application is required to be placed onto WESTMINSTER by your ACF/CCF unit. The CCAT course application form should be completed in full, is legible, signed and authorised by your unit ACF/CCF.
The fully completed CCAT course application should then be sent to HQ CCAT, Capel Curig, either by:
a. Email with the deposit payment (£250) paid by BACs with student name + course i.e. ‘Smith Canski’ in the banking reference (preferable).
b. Post with a cheque made payable to CCAT ensuring the name of the student and course is written on the back of the cheque.
