Restrictions. This course is open to CFAV’s from the ACF and CCF. ATC and SCC CFAV bids are welcome on a top up basis only. Candidates must have completed the MT Climbing Wall Instructor training course or have attained exemption from Mountain Training.
Consolidation. The period between training and assessment varies in length for each person and is an opportunity to develop your skills, paying particular attention to any weaknesses identified during the training course. Ensure you complete the prerequisites and further development identified in your action plan prior to applying for an assessment.
Course Content. The MT Climbing Wall Instructor Assessment (CWIA) including Abseil Module is a 2- day course. The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification is for climbers who are in a position of responsibility when supervising climbing activities on indoor or outdoor climbing walls, artificial boulders and towers. This includes a wide range of structures utilised for these activities which are referred to as ‘walls’. It is primarily concerned with ensuring good practice, leading to the safe enjoyment of climbing activities, and to an understanding of the sport.
Before you apply to attend a CCAT Climbing Wall Instructor assessment make sure you have done the following:
• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You must have attended a Climbing Wall Instructor (or Climbing Wall Award) training course or have been granted exemption from training.
• You must be familiar with the syllabus.
• You must have logged a minimum of 30 visits to at least three different climbing walls.
• You must have led a minimum of 40 climbs on climbing walls.
• You must be confident at leading routes at Fr 4.
• You must have assisted in the supervision of at least 15 instructed sessions on at least two different walls including a large public facility in a variety of contexts. At least five of these sessions must have personal reflective comments recorded on DLOG.
• You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least one full day or eight hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.
*You must provide evidence of a current first aid award on the first day of the course.
*You will be required to complete a home research paper.
* Ensure your MT candidate registration number is put on the CCAT course application.
CCAT Application Process.
A CCAT course application is available on WESTMINSTER and the CCAT website

An electronic course application needs to be placed onto WESTMINSTER by your ACF/CCF unit.
The CCAT course application form needs to be completed in full, legible signed and authorised by your unit ACF/CCF. The course application needs to be sent to HQ CCAT, Capel Curig, by post or email with the course fee (cheque made payable to CCAT or BACs). Ensure the name of the student and course is written on the back of the cheque or included in the BACs payment reference.
