Restrictions. This course is open to CFAV’s and cadets aged 17years + from the ACF and CCF. ATC and SCC CFAV bids are welcome on a top up basis only. This is not a course for novices as the candidate does require a combination of some winter mountaineering and rock climbing experience plus a good head for heights. Candidates must have successfully completed the WMF and BRC award or have the equivalent experience which must be identified on the CCAT course application.
Course Content. This is a 5-day introduction to climbing in winter environmental conditions (snow and ice). The content includes clothing and equipment, winter mountain hazards, weather, rope management and knot tying, belaying techniques, multi pitch winter climbing using ice climbing tools and crampons up to grade 2/3, abseiling, setting up anchors and ice screw placement. The outcome is for the candidate to be a competent second on a multi pitch winter (snow and ice) climb.
Notes. Candidates should be physically fit, free from injury and have a keen interest in adventurous activities. This course may be used towards a gold DofE residential project. Upon successful completion of this course candidates will be issued a CCAT course certificate and brassard badge (cadets only).
